“Once we start tinkering with the fundamental institutions of the game, goodness knows where we shall stop. Golf may not be perfect, but it is a very good game as it is, and experimenting with it may do much more harm than good.” - Bernard Darwin, “The Balance of Power in Golf,” from The Atlantic, November 1929.______________________________
And now a few (slightly edited) words from our peerless leader, Director of Golf Jon Pazdera: It’s important that we take care to keep our course in its best condition for your group and for the golfers behind you. Please sand your divots (even in the rough), repair your ball marks +1 on the greens (if you can’t find yours, find another), and rake the bunker when you leave (returning the rake to the nearest orange dot). Ideally you contribute to leaving the course in better shape than you found it. To those driving golf cars, park all four wheels on the path by tees and greens. To walkers with trolleys, please refrain from guiding your pushcart between bunkers and greens. When you complete your round, post your score that day. This protects the integrity of our game and ensures a fair playing field for all. Summary- Take care of the golf course.
- After raking, return rake by the orange dots.
- Post your score on the day of play.

Season Wrap-Up for 2023-2024
Our first recorded Friday Cypress game for the season was on November 3, and our final official game was Friday, April 19. Along the way almost 40 players participated, and a few late cancelations aside, we had smooth sailing. Once we adopted Golf Genius for the invitation process my job became a good bit easier; I had to chase down Talbot a few times, but, hey, he’s worth it, right? I think on one occasion we had 0 skins, on another only 1 skin — and, boy, was that a payout! — and the most skins we had in a single round were 7; that was on April 9, and Kevin Elliott won 5 of them. Also 7 on March 15. You can revisit every game, giggle over the game summaries, add up your winnings or losses — all on our Friday Cypress website. For too much of the season we missed Bob Peck and Rod Kuntz, and I hope they return next year. Bob, we need your scorecard mastery. Rod, I miss your subtle wit and cacophonous (kidding!) belly laughs. Get well, fellas. If you have any good ideas for making our game better, please add your thought to the suggestion box just outside the new fence to be installed on the other side of the pond to the left of Hole 3.Complete Player Roster for 2023-2024 Season

Game Summary
3-letter acronyms abound. There’s SOB, of course, and SOL. For those who recognize it, there’s AMF. And if you’re having a bad day because of bureaucracy, there’s DMV as a likely culprit. In our game the most telling 3-letter acronym is DFL, and Team 3 — Jackson, Cox, Zaleski, and Creese — nailed that one today. The overall winner was the slow team — Team 4: Smith, Mackinnon, Lee, Lynch — with -12, winner by 1 shot over Teams 1 and 2, who were drinking deep while waiting … waiting … A beautiful day, nevertheless. Full details below. One more thing, however: As Stan Z and I were walking toward our cars today, we offered up to each other a private pity party for our playing partners (note the alliteration, my friends). And I quoted that sage Mr. T as a self-admonition, sending my regrets to those who had to watch me today: take a look.Groups

Game Summary
I’m so flexible, I feel like Gumby. We had a lot of movement, but great fun on a beautiful day. Talbot moved back a tee and threw me for a loop … not to mention what it did to his scorekeeper. Our team thought we’d surely prove victorious today; alas, we tied for third, out of the money. Details below. 11:15 // Burris, Cox, Lockhart, Zaleski TIED FOR SECOND, BUT LOST OUT ON THE EXCEPTION HOLES AT +1. 11:22 // Brunell, Smith, Bleile, Jorgensen DFL, BUT THEY PLAYED BETTER THAN THAT. I’VE NEVER SEEN SO MUCH WORK TO SQUEEZE A STROKE OR TWO OUT OF A SCORECARD AFTER THE FACT. -13 AND +2 ON EXCEPTION HOLES. TALBOT WAS THEIR BLIND DRAW, AND HE HELPED (A LOT). 11:30 // Elliott, Talbot, Mackinnon PERHAPS THE WORST SCORECARD I’VE EVER HAD TO DEAL WITH, BUT THEY FINISHED T2 AND WON SECOND PLACE MONEY BY COMING IN -1 ON EXCEPTION HOLES. 11:37 // Lee, Snyder, Jackson, Krenz WON BY 4 SHOTS, THOUGH +2 ON EXCEPTION HOLES. HIGHLIGHTED BY — YOU GUESSED IT — SNYDER’S ROUND AND KRENZ’S CONTRIBUTIONS … AND JACKSON’S CONTRIBUTIONS … AND LEE’S SHOWING UP.- Play it down, putt it out if it counts, including as confirmation for possible SKIN.

Fri, Mar 8 (GG Round 5) Summary
It was hot, humid, drippy, and hot (did I say that already?). Team 4 — Mackinnon, Snyder, Jackson, Lynch (bastard!) — took home damn near all the money, winning by ONLY 6 over team 2 — Elliott, Shelley (fined for late to tee time), Lee, Anderson (the latter two no longer are speaking to one another). No matter how much his team wins by, Snyder always has a story to tell about how it could have been better. (No one listens; I don’t even pretend.) John Mackinnon birdied 1 and 2, parred 3. He said he was distracted by Lynch.Players for Mar 8

______________________________Fri, Feb 23 (GG* Round 4)
After the Super Bowl, after Top Gun, and as we settle back into our routines (and await Super Tuesday), it was time to return to our regular Friday Cypress game.Summary
The 11:45 and 11:52 groups were playing a different course than the 11:30 and 11:37 groups. The last two groups tied at -11 and the Lee / Mackinnon / Lewis / Fritz group won with their -1 on the exception holes. Skins … there were two with the expanded skins pot: Burris (ahem!) on 5 (with 4-for-3) and Pearsall (whoa!) on 18 (with 3-for-2!). Each paid $60. Full results below.Tee Times, Groups
11:30 // Mark Burris, Wes Creese, Peter Lynch, Bob Anderson 3rd place at -3; +3 on Exception Holes 11:37 // Tony Cox, Ken Bleile, Dick Heaps, Steve Shelley DFL at +2; +1 on Exception Holes 11:45 // Mark Cherry, Doug Pearsall, Kevin Elliott, Donald Smith Tied for 1st place at -11, but +1 on Exception Holes; 2nd place money 11:52 // Rob Lee, John Mackinnon, Dave Lewis, Jay Fritz Who wants to hear that this was Dave Lewis’s last game or that Jay Fritz, with all that pressure, finished 1st at -11 and -1 on Exception Holes? The Game 2 net best balls EXCEPT 3 net best balls on the Par 3's (Holes 4, 8, 13, 15). Net skins ($$$$) require net par confirmation on following hole (except on Hole 18, which requires net par on Hole 1). Cumulative score on Exception Holes will determine tie-breakers, if necessary. $20 entry / play it down / PUTT EVERYTHING THAT COUNTS. (Even that 1-incher you whiff, rake or miss.) Payout Total In: $320 plus $60 carry-over from last game’s unclaimed SKINS pot 1st place: $160 to Lee / Mackinnon / Lewis / Fritz 2nd place: $100 to Cherry / Pearsall / Elliott / Smith Skins: $120 split by Burris on Hole 5 (with 4-for-3) and Pearsall on Hole 18 (with 3-for-2!) And a big thanks to top recruiter John Snyder for bringing in newbies Julian Sur and Phil Burtoft. Bob Anderson agreed to play hurt, but then he was really hurt and had to step away. Rob Lee tried to pull an Al Pacino from Godfather III, but I pulled him right back in. And Sir Richie Doyle joined us. Thank you to Dick Heaps for setting up our fifth tee time. Low 2 net balls on all holes EXCEPT 10, 11, 12, where it will take the low 3 net balls. Skins requiring net par confirmation.Game Summary
Such a beautiful day. Such a difficult golf course. So many bitchy hole placements. A way-too-many putts missed from, say, 3 inches. To quote Dan Brunell: "What could go wrong?" Everything. Team 2 — Brunell, Pearsall, Cox, Elliott — went to the bathroom and, poof!, their -8 became -9. But that was only good enough for second place. Team 3 — Talbot, Lewis, Cherry, Surr — came in at -11. Imagine that: -11 was 9 shots better than Team 1 and 10 shots better than Team 5. But, hey, Teams 1 and 5 sucked today. Team 5 proved it as they won DFL. Team 5 — Heaps, Robbins, Burtoft — were short-handed, short-armed, and short of winning anything more than DFL. Skins? You want Skins? There were no Skins! $60 rolling over to our next round! ($20 went to Melissa and Deb. Commissioner's Discretionary Fund. We'll roll over $60 to the next game's skins pot! Tina Elliott — the "A" player in that family — joined us for the tally. All she could do was shake her head ...- $160 for 1st place // TEAM 3 AT -11 (TALBOT, LEWIS, CHERRY, SUR)
- $100 for 2nd place // TEAM 2 AT -9 (BRUNELL, PEARSALL, COX, ELLIOTT)
- $40 for 3rd place // TEAM 4 AT -7 (DOYLE, MACKINNON, LYNCH, SHELLEY)
- $80 in SKINS pot // NADA, $0, NO CONFIRMATIONS! $20 TO SERVERS!

Fri, Feb 2 (GG Round 2)
Our game for Feb 2 is set; pairings below. In the future we’ll make every attempt to send out the player invitation on Thursday for the following week’s Friday game — 8 days prior — then include it again on Friday when we follow up with that day’s game results. If you’d like to make a pairing request, we’ll consider it along with our normal algorithms and calculations — performed by ChatMB’s A.I. bots. Typically we attempt to pair groups with an eye on maximum competitiveness and an ear out for trash talk. Summary
The weather looked good before it looked bad. Wait a minute: It was good again … No, bad. By 9:00 we had lost two, then three players. But at 10:00 we were the envy of the “I want a better clubhouse” crowd. Missed Brunell, Robbins, and Zaleski, but all others came and stayed dry for the duration. Imagine being one of the unfortunates in New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, New York, South Carolina, and almost anywhere else having to put up with … weather! Now imagine this: Elliott, Mackinnon, Lynch, and maybe 2 or 3 others failed to confirm skins today, leaving all the skins money for 2-for-1 Pearsall and Rob Lee. The game was close, but good guys came out on top. Results below.Addendum to Jan 5 report
Allow me to add this to the summary from Jan 5: In addition to making 3 gross birdies, Peter Lynch also unloaded his electric trolley in the fairway bunker on 16 and into the bushes separating 18 green from the practice area. He was so focused on his game, he lost his drone power.Players

Say “Hurrah!” for John Jackson’s return. Ditto for Kevin Elliott and Ken Bleile. (When notified that his standby status had been upgraded, Ken said, "I found $20 on the bathroom floor in the men's room at the Cleveland airport, and I've been wondering what to do with it. Now I know.”)Game Summary
You know the story of Clark Kent. "Mild-mannered reporter” and all that. But give him a phone booth and, at will, he transforms into Superman, "able to leap tall buildings in a single bound” and yada, yada, yada. The great thing about Clark Kent / Superman was that he could do what he needed to do when he wanted to. Our team’s Kevin Elliott was both Clark Kent and Superman today, but he lacked the power to be one or the other on demand. Case in point: After a pretty good drop-kick tee shot on Hole 12, Kevin has 200 yards into the wind to a left/back flag. He nails a soaring, majestic, super-human 4-iron (who even carries a 4-iron anymore?) into the flight pattern from RSW. We can’t see it land several minutes later, but it must be good because he’s marching down the fairway trailing his trolley, long strides from his 6’4” frame. His ball has come to rest just past pin high, he has a tricky downhill putt of about 15 feet, right-to-left, and the only thing going for him is that the putt is into that ferocious wind so if he misses, he may be able to keep it within 5-10 feet. “If he misses?” He pours that sucker right into the center of the hole, a 4-for-3 and, well, you know the rest. But, wait, maybe you don’t know the rest. Unlike Superman / Clark Kent, Kevin’s super powers don’t come and go on demand. Instead, they pop up, then, Poof!, they’re gone again. On 13 tee, needing a par to confirm that beautiful birdie on 12. Clark Kent shows up again out of the blue. Kevin’s 8-iron is left of left, and left some more. I don’t think it ever crossed green grass. “That’s not over yet,” he says. “I’m going to drop and make that sucker to confirm.” Yeah, and you’ll have a shot at Lois Lane after the round, my friend. Well, you know how that ended, right? Awwwwww. In other news, same group, Peter Lynch made three (3!) gross birdies, 2 of them confirmed for skins, and hit the flag on 15 for what would have been his 11th ace. Listen … that’s the sound of Peter’s index dropping to the ground level. Thanks, everyone, for playing. Our Friday games have so much to share. Like Tony Cox: “That was the longest day of my life,” he said. I wanted, waited … “But it was fun, okay?” he rejoined. Stan Zaleski said he’s just glad to be able to join us. I could tell you more, but you’ve probably already read enough, right?Game

Summary
With 11 players it’s a challenge getting the teams set up so we allow the 3-ball to choose how they want to add their fourth player. Today’s middle group — Messrs. Kuntz, Peck, and Robbins — chose to go with a blind draw, and Rod beseeched me that a blind draw is not to include anyone in his own group. So after yours truly carved up a sheet of paper and labeled seven (7) numbers from which he then drew #6 (Dave Lewis), he was satisfied with the process. But Dave Lewis was able to get Kuntz/Peck/Robbins to -5 … or 9 shots short of Talbot/Lewis/Lynch/Snyder. Minus 5 (-5) WAS good enough, however, to ensure that Cherry, Burris, and Mackinnon (sounds like a law firm, right?) was DFL … at even par. Blame it on Rob Lee’s no-show performance. Reading email for comprehension is difficult, apparently. In Memoriam? Kuntz says he’ll play next week if he doesn’t kill himself first. 10:15 // Cherry,Game

After a false start as 2-balls, we ended up with three 3-somes and played 2 low net balls on 18 holes (no exception holes). On paper, the 10:30 team — Slapshot Mackinnon, ENT specialist Peck, and just-back-from-the-Love-Boat Cherry — was formidable. But we don’t play “on paper.” Each of the three teams came in beaten, downtrodden, certain of DFL. But only one team was DFL: the favorite. The big winner was Heaps, who had the only skin — on Hole 1, no less — taking the entire $60 Skins pot. Thanks, all, for playing. Full results below.Pairings / Teams

I don’t know what they were drinking / smoking / erasing, but our first group out was pretty effing awesome. They sucked on the EXCEPTION HOLES, but apparently they did something pretty special everywhere else. As I sat beside Peter Lynch in the bar afterwards and was subjugated to his round recount (twice), I began to see their team’s behavioral pattern: “Let Lynch run,” his teammates were thinking, and “Keep Anderson off-balance.” Must have worked. That said … Lynch, for all his metres-below-handicap play, did not earn a skin. “I can’t believe that,” he said. Awwww. Speaking of “Awwww,” Tony Cox failed to confirm his skins … twice. Fri, Dec 8 — Game Summary
I knew I should have chosen Mark Cherry for my team today. Just knew it. But, most likely, my game would have brought him down, down, down. Nice playing by the Cherry/Fritz team. Low on the front. Low on the back. And, as John Snyder quickly deduced, “That means they were probably low for the overall too.” Yup. And did I say, low on the EXCEPTION holes? Fritz and Cherry backed up a Brinks truck to help them take their winnings home … or to their safe deposit boxes. Meanwhile, SKINS went to Lynch (Hole 2), Mackinnon (Hole 8), Fritz (Hole 9), and, a-hem, Burris (Hole 14). If my notes and memory serve me, only one skin went unconfirmed. (Sorry Jay.) Full results below. Thanks for playing, gents. It was a good day … for watching Fritz and Cherry rake in a pot. 10:07 Team 1: Lewis, Anderson -1 / +1 = 0 (+5 on Exception holes) Team 2: Talbot, (Burris) -2 / -4 = -6 (+1 on Exception holes) 10:15 Team 3: Mackinnon, Lee -6 / -2 = -8 (+3 on Exception holes) Team 4: Fritz, Cherry -7 / -5 = -12 (EVEN on Exception holes) 10:22 Team 5: Peck, Cox +2 / 0 = +2 (+4 on Exception holes)) 10:30 Team 6: Lynch, Snyder -4 / -3 = -7 (+3 on Exception holes) Team 7: Shelley, Brunell +2 / +1 = +3 (+4 on Exception holes)Game and Payout

Fri, Dec 1 — Game Summary
There’s a reason we play 18 holes instead of just 9. There’s also a reason we putt them all if they count … but that’s another story. On the first tee, Rod Kuntz complained that Team 1 (Brunell, Talbot, Snyder, Pearsall) was a cinch to win. Perhaps a favorite on paper, but it was not to be this day. Team 2 (Lynch, Fritz, Lee, Lewis) was the winner. Team 4 (Anderson, Cox, Cherry, Kuntz) was a “might-have-been,” but they were +5 on the Exception Holes. So much for “on paper.” Steve Shelley should win something for having the most UNCONFIRMED skins. And the shortest missed putt. Yet he intends to return next week and give it another go. A warm day and lots of shots left out there for someone else to take advantage of. See you next week. 10:07 Brunell, Talbot, Snyder, Pearsall DFL at -6 overall and +6 on EXCEPTION HOLES ... $0 10:15 Lynch, Fritz, Lee, Lewis TIE for 1st at -12; won on EXCEPTION HOLES at +1 … $160 10:22 Heaps, Burris, Mackinnon, Shelley -11 overall; +3 on EXCEPTION HOLES … $0 10:30 Anderson, Cox, Cherry, Kuntz TIE for 1st at -12 … but +5 on EXCEPTION HOLES … $80 CONFIRMED SKINS: $20 EACH: Dave Lewis (Hole 1) // Dan Brunell (Hole 3) // Jay Fritz (Hole 13) // Bob Anderson (Hole 18) Game: $20 per player entry; total $320. 2 best balls NET per foursome EXCEPT 3 NET BALLS ON PAR 3 HOLES.. Game Summary
It was nip. It was tuck. The front side yielded better scores than the back. Who knew? The tiebreaker — the exception holes — ended in a tie, so Teams 1 and 2 split 2nd place money. Thanks to Kuntz and Fritz for playing hurt (though Fritz’s pain was totally self-inflicted). Poor Jay Fritz: he couldn’t even keep straight how many shots of expensive Bourbon he consumed last night. He didn’t speak until the back 9 (though he played well). Reply from John Snyder: “We were actually -14. I miss-scored Dave's birdie on 12 as a par. Changing it as a birdie got us from -13 to -14.” My reply to John Snyder: “Hmmm. I guess you still win. Drat!” Skins? There were 5, paying $16 each: Snyder (3), Lynch (4) Mackinnon (7), Lewis (12, after an audit); Pearsall (15). Very impressive. Query: If Snyder missed “Dave’s birdie on 12,” does that mean Lewis did not have a skin on 12? We should investigate (and hope that Lewis hasn’t already spent his $16). Final game note: Rod Kuntz and Dick Heaps each shot 78. Note to organizer: need to break up that team.Players / Handicaps

Fri, Nov 10 Game Summary
In conditions reminiscent of Ken Venturi’s “near death” victory at Congressional in 1964, we soldiered through the heat and humidity today, then met in the bar (“I love saving $10,000 in here!”) for the scores and skins. As you may recall, we had an odd number signed up, so one of us (namely, me) had to pony in $20 two times, but that was okay, because my two partners both won. Hooray for Pearsall and Lynch. (So many Canadiens and Canadians; so little time to listen to their stories.) Winners were -5, and the Lynch / Burris team finished first due to their -5 (vs. -4 for Pearsall / Burris) on the par 5s. Wier and Peck finished third. Skins? Yes, there were three, and they occurred on the final three holes: Lynch with a net eagle on 16; Peck with a tricky 30-yard pitch on 17; then Lynch again on 18 with a dandy 4-for-3. All confirmed, of course. Thanks to all for playing. Now, go take an ice bath!Roster / Handicaps

Game
Better Ball Net of 2-some. (Note: Since we had 11 players, the Burris and Pearsall team did not play in the same group and built their better ball after the round.) Burris also partnered with Peter Lynch … and paid an additional $20 for the privilege. All putts that count must be holed. $20 entry. $240 total in pot. Net skins, with net par confirmation required. We’ll call the skins in the bar after the round. It was a blustery day. (Understatement.) Difficult to putt. (Ditto.) Tough to get 3 balls to count on the par 3’s. Apparently, for this golfer at least, a 1-footer on Hole 17 was pretty tough too. (Sobering.) Team 2 (Anderson, Burris, Kuntz) grasped the honor and the $20 winners’ fee with score of +2, edging out 5-shot victory over Team 1 (Cox, Brunell, Heaps). Congratulations to Tony Cox for a well-read bunker shot to make birdie on 5. As he confessed, “That secured for me a +3 overall score on the 5-pars today.” Next week’s game has 10 so far; room for 2 more. Let me know if you’d like to join the group below.Roster / Handicaps
